Tom Hilgendorf (Had a stroke in 2005)
I received intensive therapy from ASL and now I'm volunteering at ASL. I enjoy helping other stroke survivors like me, also it helps me practice and hone my conversation skills in a safe environment. Thank you to Shilpa and Shelley for giving me this great opportunity.
Pat Crow (Had a stroke 2008)
Pat is now living independently. She had a stroke in July of 2008 and has been receiving therapy at Austin Speech Labs since September of that year. Barbara Rush, Pat's sister credits Austin Speech Labs for her sister's recovery. Read more about Pat Crow in this Februrary 2009 article from the Austin Chronicle.
Lacy Coleman (Had a stroke in 2006)
Austin Speech Labs helped me get out of my isolation and back into college. I'm not only back to college, I just made an "A" in a course. Thank you ASL for giving my life back. I love going back and visiting ASL and always happy to help other stroke survivors like me.

The first thing I have to say about Austin Speech Labs is that they care. They’re not worried about making some insurance company happy, though often that is part of a speech therapists job – they worry about you. And they’re not worried about making it at Austin Speech Labs; witness my first session, in October, when a founding member told me I was better suited for an eight week course that started in January rather than joining their current six week session. Then sent me materials to work on in the interim until January. That’s the kind of care of which I speak.
When I started at Austin Speech Labs, They evaluated me and essentially boiled my problems down to three areas: my working memory, my word finding, and saying words of more than two syllablesthey evaluated me and essentially boiled my problems down to three areas: my working memory, my word finding, and saying words of more than two syllables. The thing that was amazing is that the many different kinds of therapy, from writing in group, unscrambling words in individual therapy, to word challenges on the computer, were aimed at these three areas.
I improved a lot, no doubt I have further to go, but I’m practicing law as I write this. And my working memory is a lot better than it was when I started at Austin Speech Labs. I remember things that I used to forget, like phone numbers or case numbers.
I have a ways to go to make it all the way back. And, truth is, I don’t know if I’ll get there. But Austin Speech Labs is there for me, just like it will be for you. Wherever you are, they will make you better. I’m coming back for another session. Why? Because I’m getting better, and because Shilpa and Shelley are part of the process. We’re a team now, and I know they aren’t going to leave me to go it alone. Want to be a part of it with them? Then join now.
